Fluted column faces can be routed rather quickly with a plunge router and guide rail. These 3-flute column faces are done with a jig and two guide settings (one for the center flute and another setting does both outside flutes--just flip the board). I avoid burn marks by making several light passes and before the final pass do a quick, full-depth plunge at both ends (just down and back up--making a "thermometer bulb" profile, so the material is already removed at the ends where burning is most likely), then make the final pass burn-free.
